CABINET REFINISHING IN GRAND JUNCTION

There are alternative ways to update your cabinets besides ripping them out and installing new ones, each of which will save you a significant amount of money.

Cabinet refacing involves removing the doors and hardware, covering the existing cabinet boxes and sides with a wood veneer or laminate, and then replacing the doors and hardware to match the new veneer.

Cabinet refinishing, on the other hand, leaves all of the cabinets intact and replaces the finish with paint, varnish, or stain.  This process costs much less than replacing or refacing the cabinets.

The refinishing process first begins with a thorough cleaning of all the wood surfaces.  A degreaser is used to eliminate any oils or grease that have accumulated on them. Once any damaged areas are repaired, we will either restore the original finish or change the color with paint, stain, or glaze.

Our team of experienced painters will work with you to create a look that you will love for years to come. We use only the highest-quality paints and finishes, and all of our products are environmentally friendly and safe for both children and pets.

We understand that your home is your biggest investment, and we want to help you protect it and improve it. Let us show you what we can do! Give us a call today to schedule a free consultation.

IS IT BETTER TO REFINISH OR REPLACE CABINETS?

If your kitchen's design is functional and you don't want to change the placement of the cabinets, refinishing is the best option.  Not only will your cabinets have a fresh new look, but you'll save a good amount of money and you and your family won't have to live through a major renovation.  Changing, or sometimes even cleaning, the hardware will also help to give your kitchen an updated look.

If your cabinets are not made of wood, refinishing them may not be an option. If the cabinets need to be disassembled, stripped, and sanded before painting or staining, it may end up being cheaper to replace them.

It's always best to consult with a cabinet refinishing company like Grand Junction Painters so we can help you make an informed decision.  Contact us today to discuss your cabinets and to set up a consultation.

HOW TO CHOOSE THE RIGHT LOOK

FOR YOUR CABINETS

Once you've decided that you want to change up your kitchen cabinets, it's time to figure out how you want them to look.  Here are some tips on how to make that big decision:

Think About Your Home's Style

Because the kitchen cabinets are typically the first thing anyone sees when entering, they should immediately reflect the style of your home.  Think about what kind of design will work best with the style you want.  For example, a traditional design would work well with dark wood grain cabinets.  A more modern and fresh design would work well with light wood grain doors and drawer fronts. Cabinet hardware also makes a huge impact on design and style. Search for as many examples as you can online and in magazines, and really put some thought into what look you are trying to achieve.

Choose a Paint Color

There are so many options when it comes to paint color.  You can use a single color for all of the cabinets and drawers, different colors for upper and lower cabinets, and even one color for the cabinet frames and a different color for the doors and drawer fronts.  Keep in mind that lighter colors will make a space look larger and darker colors will make it look smaller.  Whichever color you are leaning towards, keep in mind how it will make you feel when you walk into the kitchen and what kind of value it will add to your home.

Select the Cabinet Finish

The paint finish you choose can make a big difference on the final look.  High gloss will make the color pop, satin finish helps bring out the natural wood grain, matte makes the cabinets look like they've been stained or painted, and a brushed finish gives the cabinets a very muted look.  At Grand Junction Painters, we can show you examples of each finish to help you make your decision.

Choose Unique Hardware

The cabinet and drawer hardware you choose makes a huge impact on the overall look and style.  There is a huge variety of hardware on the market, so it can become pretty overwhelming to choose.  Your best bet is to consult with our cabinet refinishing experts so we can help narrow down the choices for you and help you make a good decision.

Grand Junction Painters specializes in cabinet refacing and would love to help you choose the right style, color, finish, and hardware so that your kitchen (or bathroom) really pops. Give us a call today!

COMMON MISTAKES WHEN PAINTING CABINETS

Painting cabinets is a great way to give your kitchen a new or trendy look without spending a small fortune.  If you decide to go the DIY route to save even more money, you'll need to have a lot of patience, time, and attention to detail.  Below are some of the most common cabinet painting mistakes homeowners make, all of which can be avoided by hiring a professional painter:

  • Not removing doors & drawers

It may seem like it's going to take forever to remove all the hinges and doors, but it will be even more time consuming trying to paint around the hinges.  Using a power drill to remove the hinges and hardware from the doors makes it a quick and painless task.

  • Not labeling the doors & drawers

As the doors and drawers are being removed, labeling each item is important.  Even if you don't have many cabinets or drawers, it can still get confusing when it's time to put it all back together again.  Be sure to label all the hardware accordingly as well.

  • Not cleaning the cabinets

Dirt, grease, and dust accumulate on cabinets, especially in the kitchen.  Even if you think your cabinets look clean, you still need to use a grease-cutting cleaner and hot water to remove anything that can affect the paint adherence.

  • Not sanding the cabinets

Even if your primer does not require sanding, cabinets should always be sanded before painting.  Sanding will remove the lacquer finish, allowing the primer to grip the surface better.  It also helps remove light scratches and creates a smooth surface for painting. Using an electric sander is recommended instead of trying to sand everything by hand.

  • Not removing dust

Sanding any type of wood will create a lot of dust.  This dust can completely ruin a paint job, so every last speck needs to be removed.  Wipe down every surface that is going to be painted and clean all the dust from the room.

  • Not using primer

Primer is a must when painting cabinets.  It gives the paint something to stick to so it will last longer and helps to create that high-end finish you desire.  Be sure to use the correct type of primer for your cabinet surfaces and avoid latex primer

  • Not prepping for painting

Many people think they have better painting skills than they do and end up dripping paint all over the floor, countertops, and appliances.  Taking the time to cover all the exposed surfaces around your cabinets will help protect your kitchen from all the mess that painting causes.

  • Not applying thin layers of paint

Applying paint in a thick coat can cause bubbles and drip marks, and can chip off easily.  Cabinets should be painted with multiple thin layers of paint to achieve a smooth, durable surface.

  • Not using the correct materials

Kitchen cabinets should be easy to wipe down, so a semi-gloss or satin finish should be used. Using the correct brushes and rollers for the job is also necessary, so be sure to check which equipment should be used with the type of paint you're using.

  • Not allowing the paint to dry

It's hard to be patient and let the paint thoroughly dry between coats, but not doing so can ruin the finish.  You should follow the directions on the paint can for drying times between each coat.  Once painting is complete, it will take several days for the paint to fully cure into a hard and durable surface.  Before the paint is cured, it is susceptible to chips and marks.

Painting cabinets is a time consuming, messy process for people who haven't done it before. If not done correctly, the cabinets will look blotchy, bumpy, or worse.  Professional cabinet painters can get the job done easily and your cabinets will have a high-end finish.  Contact us today for a free estimate!

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

See some common questions and answers below, or call us at 555 555-5555.

  • Will I regret painting my cabinets?

In all the years we've been painting cabinets, we have never heard a client say they regretted the decision.  If you decide you want to change the color after you've had them painted, it is much less expensive the second time around.

  • Will the paint last, or will it chip and peel?

Painted cabinets will last a long time if done correctly.  The problem many people come across is that they or the painter they hire doesn't know how to paint cabinets correctly. It takes a lot of time and patience to refinish cabinets the right way, and unfortunately, many people don't realize that.  At Grand Junction Painters, we take every step necessary to ensure your paint lasts as long as possible and will stand up well to daily life.

  • How long will it take to paint the cabinets?

The average kitchen will take about 1-2 weeks to complete the cabinet refinishing process.  We typically remove all of the doors and drawer fronts and take them to our shop to paint. They typically require several coats that need to dry thoroughly in between.  Keep in mind that the time depends on how many cabinet doors and drawers you have, and how dark the cabinets are compared to the paint color you've chosen.

  • Can I keep using my kitchen during the process?

We typically work on all of the doors and drawers first, so you can continue to use your kitchen during that time.  When it is time to paint the cabinet frames, we cover everything in the room to ensure nothing gets paint on it, so you will not be able to use the kitchen at that time.

  • Can you get rid of the wood grain look?

It is possible to use putty and filler to smooth out the wood grain, but it is very costly. Most people who choose to have their cabinets painted do so because it is much cheaper to paint than to reface them all.  If you want the cabinets to look smooth with no wood grain appearance, it will cost you just as much as it would to have all the doors replaced.

  • How do I care for my newly painted cabinets?

Painted cabinets will last much longer if you keep them clean and keep the environment free from things that can mess with paint, such as moisture, temperature changes, and sunlight. Ensuring your kitchen has proper ventilation will help reduce the heat and moisture, and using shades or curtains to block sunlight will help prevent the paint from fading.  Cleaning the cabinets typically just requires a damp cloth.

  • Do you refinish anything other than cabinets?

Yes, we refinish bathroom cabinets and vanities, bed frames, furniture, stair railings, and any other cabinets you may have.  We also offer trim and molding painting as well as interior wall painting.

  • Do you install the hardware?

Absolutely.  The cabinet refinishing job is not complete without the hardware.  We reattach all the doors and drawer fronts and clean up all of our mess so your kitchen is left looking new, fresh, and clean.
